Montessori Approach at SJCCC

Since 2023, SJCCC has integrated the Montessori Approach and philosophy into its Long-Term Care programming, grounded in the belief that “the more you do for me, the more you take away from me.” The Montessori Approach empowers residents by focusing on their strengths, abilities, and personal interests.

This individualized, adaptable model supports each resident based on their current level of ability. By emphasizing autonomy, purpose, and meaningful engagement, the Montessori Approach helps residents rediscover their sense of self while promoting confidence and independence.

At SJCCC, our Montessori-based programs include:

  • Resident-centred 1:1 sessions tailored to personal abilities and interests
  • Small group and interest-based programs to foster connection and purpose
  • Support with transitions into Long-Term Care, helping new residents engage in meaningful activities from the start
  • Activity-specific assistance that promotes success, dignity, and independence in recreation activities
  • Unit-specific Montessori activities and supplies
  • Practical life and fine-motor programs, such as folding and sorting
  • Sensory activities
  • Gardening initiatives
  • Cueing and supportive strategies to promote independence with daily routines and meals
